Winches for Forklift - Winches are mechanical devices that can wind out, or pull up the tension of a wire cable, cable, wire rope or a rope. These tools, in its most simple form, are constructed of a spool and a hand crank. More complex winches are seen at the heart of machines such as elevators, steam shovels and tow trucks. Every now and then the spool can be known as the winch drum. Complex designs have gear assemblies which could be driven by hydraulic, electric, pneumatic or internal combustion drives. Some winches could consist of a solenoid brake or a mechanical brake or a ratchet and pawl device so as to stop it from unwinding unless the pawl is retracted.
Usually, the rope is stored on the winch. There is similar machinery referred to as a capstan which does not store the rope. In sailing, when a line is trimmed on a sailboat, the crew member works the handle of the winch utilizing one hand while tailing the other so as to maintain tension on the turns. Some winches have a cleat or stripper to maintain tension. These designs are called "self-tailing" winches.
Quite often, a winch is utilized in large theatrical shows as a part of the mechanics in order to move backdrop. Sometimes there are also winches really imbedded in the stage in order to help transfer the several larger set pieces off and on the stage.
Recently, winches have been made in certain designs for water and snow sports. This new generation of winches is designed to be able to pull riders rapidly across a body of water or of snow. This could stimulate a riding experience which is normally supplied by a wave runner, boat or a snow mobile.
